Woodford Reserve’s 2021 Master’s Collection release has finally shown up: Woodford Reserve Five-Malt Stouted Mash, a single malt release that is designed to be “a whiskey that exhibits the flavors of a classic beer.” It’s not made from beer but rather, as the name suggests, five malts mixed up, fermented, and distilled — though I’m unclear what makes it “stouted” aside from the choice of malts.
Muckety-Muck 25-Year-Old is the latest release in the Orphan Barrel series from Diageo, which highlights limited quantities of very old whiskeys heroically rescued from the mouldering corners of various warehouses. Many Orphan Barrel releases (although not all) have been bourbons, but Muckety Muck is something different: a single grain whisky from the Port Dundas Distillery, an enormous grain distillery that operated in Glasgow and closed its doors in 2010. Grain whisky is a Scottish whisky category that refers to any whisky distilled from a mash that isn’t 100% malted barley. In practice, it’s usually distilled on massive continuous column stills from mostly wheat or corn, with a small amount of malted barley. It can be single (the product of one distillery), or blended (the product of multiple distilleries). The way drinkers most frequently encounter it is as a constituent in blended Scotch whiskies, which are a mixture of malt and grain whisky.

Dave Pickerell built WhistlePig in pursuit of crafting the world’s finest and most interesting Rye Whiskeys. After years of devotion to patient aging and innovative blending, we’ve turned our attention to experiments with grain – in particular, the bygone practice of malting rye. Before industrial catalysts were introduced to increase efficiency, farmer distillers would malt a small portion of their rye harvest in order to access the grain’s starch content and set off the fermentation process. Floral, earthy flavors imparted by malted rye would add nuance to the bold, peppery spice character of classic rye whiskey. To harness these flavors for our oldest expression of WhistlePig yet, we selected a whiskey distilled from 79% rye, 15% malted rye, and 6% malted barley. These grains form a harmony that spans the flavor spectrum, at once soft and floral, rich and savory, and full of spice. Its complexity is only heightened after 18 years in the barrel.
Our whiskey has a smooth, slightly sweet taste that leaves your palate with a creamy, vanilla finish. Our American whiskey is 80 proof and carefully blended and aged in oak barrels to bring out its bold flavors.
